Dès 1950, Pierre Ferry se lance dans l’aventure mancelle avec une barquette de sa fabrication. Renault participe officiellement aux éditions 51 et 52 avec des 4cv 1063 engagées par des privés mais préparées et soutenues par la Régie elle-même. Si la victoire de classe fut obtenue en 1951, l’année 52 fut loin des attentes et c’est ainsi que Renault préféra apporter son soutien à des préparateurs comme Pons, Rosier, Vernet et Pairard ou Deutch et Bonnet. Jaguar ne peut compter que sur Mike Hawthorn pour rivaliser avec l’équipage de la Mercedes. Celui-ci faisant équipe avec Ivor Bueb considéré comme un bon pilote mais qui ne possède pas le même coup de volant que les trois stars. Lofty England le manager de l’équipe Jaguar, élabore sa stratégie en décidant d’opposer Hawthorn à Fangio et de placer Bueb face à Moss. Moss étant plus rapide que Bueb, England compte sur la consommation plus élevée de la Mercedes pour limiter les écarts. Hawthorn et Fangio s’affrontent dès le départ et doivent assurer chacun le premier relais. La stratégie d’England fonctionne d’autant plus que Fangio a loupé son départ. La SLR comble son retard mais Hawthorn tient bon. Le rythme est très soutenu voire trop soutenu,&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;et vers 18 heures alors que les premiers ravitaillements vont avoir lieu, Hawthorn double la Mercedes de Pierre Levegh puis l’Healey de Lance Mackling, se rabat et freine à l’approche des stands. La manœuvre est mal-comprise par le pilote de l’Healey ou Hawthorn a mal-évalué les distances (trop concentré par son duel sans doute), et c’est alors que s’enclenche le processus de ce qui reste la plus grande catastrophe du sport automobile. Dans le livre de François Hurel sur Alpine au Mans on peut voir la photo de cette voiture qui d'après la légende de la photo aurait tourné aux essais. Or il se pourrait &lt;span class="postbody"&gt;H. Beroul le photographe, était un spécialiste du tirage rapide et en négligeant le temps de passage dans un des bains, cela aurait éliminé la couleur jaune ! Une seule chose est sûre, ce n'est pas un négatif. Cet engagement&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;coïncidant avec les 40 ans de la marque, c’est sous les yeux de Jean Rédélé présent au départ que cette Alpine s’élancera pour les deux tours d’horloge. Deux châssis seront spécialement réalisés par l’usine de Dieppe mais seulement un sera utilisé en course. La préparation étant l’œuvre de Legeay Sport, la voiture affiche&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;430ch et possède l’une des plus belles vitesses de pointe de la catégorie. Auteurs d’un bon résultat, Roy, Galmard, Police terminerons 13&lt;sup&gt;ème&lt;/sup&gt; de l’épreuve (34&lt;sup&gt;ème&lt;/sup&gt; sur la grille) et 5&lt;sup&gt;ème&lt;/sup&gt; de la catégorie GT2.   &lt;/p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Cette édition devait voir s’affronter trois constructeurs prestigieux : Jaguar, Mercedes et Ferrari.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Une mauvaise suite d’évènements devait provoquer l’accident de la Mercedes de Pierre Levegh et la mort de 80 spectateurs transformant la course en tragédie.&lt;br /&gt;Renault ne participe plus officiellement à la course en cette édition, mais la marque est toutefois représentée par Vernet Pairard qui utilise une mécanique de 4cv 1063 pour mouvoir sa toute nouvelle barquette. Chaque exemplaire est engagé à titre privé malgré l’avis défavorable de la Régie.   &lt;/span&gt;&lt;p style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: arial;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;Et puis il y a la barquette construite avec les éléments mécaniques de la&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;4cv par Pierre Ferry qui concourra dans la classe des 750 cm3 suite à une modification moteur.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;span style="line-height: 115%;font-family:arial;font-size:100%;"  &gt;Malgré une concurrence élevée et grâce à leur fiabilité trois des cinq 4cv s’octroieront le triplé dans leur catégorie, alors que la barquette Ferry devra quant à elle abandonner.
